Beauty Gurus – What is a Beauty Guru and How to be a Beauty Guru

What is a beauty guru? How do I become one? Where can I find them? These are all great questions to ask when it comes to beauty gurus. Here’s my definition:

What is a Beauty Guru?

“A beauty guru is a person, male or female, that has a passion for an aspect of beauty, whether it be makeup, hair, nails, fashion, or skincare. To gain the title of a beauty guru, one must be interested in more than one of these areas, and must have a following.” -Amber Johnson (Me)

For example, if someone is really into nails and nail designs, and has a following or people who observe their work, then the person would be a nail guru, not a beauty guru. If you are only interested in one of those topics, then you are more of a specialized guru, not one for beauty in general.

Where can you find Beauty Gurus?

Beauty Gurus exist all over the internet. The top two places to go for content from one is YouTube, which is by far the biggest, and individual blogs. Many gurus from YouTube have their own blog as well, and usually they will embed all of their videos on their blogs as well, so those might be better places to find content. However, lots of the newer girls (I use girls as a general term) in the YouTube community don’t have blogs. Also, many of the younger girls don’t either because they don’t know how to set one up, or they just don’t know what a blog is yet.

The best way to follow/subscribe to your favorite YouTube gurus is through the subscription service on YouTube or through adding their blog to your RSS feed. You can use Google Reader to subscribe to all of your favorite blogs, and get all of their new posts delivered to your feed. This is how I keep up with all of my favorite beauty bloggers.

How do I become a Beauty Guru?

Being a beauty guru takes time and skill. It doesn’t simply happen overnight. First you have to make sure you are dedicated to the challenge, the put your all into it and jump right in. There are hundreds and hundreds, possibly thousands, of beauty gurus online, and it’s simple to become one if you know how.

I recommend starting off with a blog and YouTube. In the end, the best gurus have both, so the sooner you start with either, the better, and the more chances you will be found. Set up your blog with an about page, talking about yourself so your future readers can get to know you. If you want, you can do a YouTube video like this to, to start off. Make a few videos, but make sure they are high-quality, and your best work.

The amount of followers you get will be based on the quality of your work, not quantity, so don’t just post really quick makeup tutorials that are hasty and half-done because nobody would want to watch that. When you are starting out, you need to make sure you put your best foot forward to make a great first impression.

Continue doing your best work, constantly, and eventually, the followers/subscribers will roll in. Surprisingly, there are millions of people online looking for beauty-related content, so there’s a large audience to reach.

When you have followers, don’t let them down! Make sure you update your blog or channel as often as possible- once a week is nice. After you become more famous, you will be getting haters, and the best beauty gurus who are experienced with haters, always recommend ignoring them. I suggest you do this too because getting mad because some internet troll is being mean is a waste of time, and it will make you not want to continue what you started. Let positive feedback lift you rather than negative feedback make you feel bad about yourself.

If you have any further questions about beauty gurus, blogs, or making YouTube videos, feel free to leave a comment or message me. Thanks for stopping by my blog! If you like it, don’t forget to subscribe! :)

I really want to do this but I don’t have the right “supply’s” and suggestions. And how do I set up a blog?

That is a great question. I used to be exactly like you- I watched beauty videos and really wanted to start my own, and my own blog, but I didn’t have the right supplies. I started out by saving up the money I earned from doing chores and random jobs, and bought makeup and brushes that were on sale or at good prices. I built up a collection over mainly one summer when I had a job, and I practiced a lot. I started blogging on blogger.com which is super easy, and really easy to make. I filmed on a small digital camera, and used it to take pictures as well. Eventually I saved up enough for a better camera, better/more makeup, and enough to buy my own domain name and hosting for my blog and spent hours upon hours learning how to make one from scratch using wordpress. I would advise you to do the same thing, and message me if you have any help! or just comment back on here, or tweet me! hope this helps :)

how do you set up the camera and your mirror? I’ve tried filming videos but I can’t get a good placement so I can still look in the mirror but not have it in the way of my camera.

I have a big mirror behind my camera in the bathroom and another one usually in my hand, so when I’m doing detail work I just hold it. Hope this helps! What’s your channel name?

Hey, Amber! I love your blog, and you’ve really inspired me in starting my own beauty youtube channel and/or blog!. In my channel, i’d like to cover the obvious hair/makeup/fashion, but i’d also like to cover the concept of inner beauty. All of us girls have those days where we need a little pick me up and we don’t feel the best, so i’d like to reach out to girls who feel that no matter how often. I”m really unsure of how to establish myself as a beauty guru on YouTube, and i don’t know where to start. What do you suggest? Thanks for the tips on this page, and having such a wonderful blog, you’re beautiful!(:

Thank you so much, Natalia! I’m so glad you were inspired! I love to see new bloggers emerging, especially if I have anything to do with it :) That’s a great idea to focus on inner beauty as well because it seems that most people forget about that and are just so focused on the outside. Don’t get me wrong, I focus on that a lot too, but it’s always important to keep in touch with good morals. One way to establish yourself on YouTube is to make a few videos, maybe 10 or so, then try to get followers. They need to see some videos already there to know what you’re like so you should have some videos up first, then tell your friends to subscribe, then post your videos on places like tumblr and pinterest and if anyone’s interested in the topic, they will follow. After that, you can try doing collabs with people with similar amounts of followers and you will gain more. Thank you so much for all of your lovely comments about my blog :)

Start using whatever you have. That way you can get practice and see if you’d want to continue with it before you spend a lot of money and decide you don’t really want to continue. Before I could get a tripod, I would stack my camera on a bunch of boxes and books and just prop it up against something. Be innovative until you have money to buy nicer equipment!

Yess! I’m so glad to hear that! My advice is START NOW! Once you find the motivation, don’t just feel it, act on it! You won’t always be this motivated so you need to capitalize on this! Use whatever resources you have available right now, and just try out different things and start making videos and learning from any mistakes. The only thing you can do from there is get better!

Hi! I would really love to start beauty videos and I tried to record myself on the camera but I sound weird and I don’t like to see myself on camera I look so different is it because my camera is not high-guality? Please for advise:)

That’s just how I started! Eventually you will get used to your voice and face on camera. HD cameras usually make the picture and the person look a bit better because there is less noise in the picture, but starting with a regular camera is good so you can get used to it and get practice. You should definitely start a channel though!

I really want to start a youtube channel, but i’m just not sure on how to come up with a name that best suits me. I’m also scared of the negative feedback that I might get if I start a channel, as well as if I should tell my school. Also I want to know of you think I’ll get any views on my first few videos if I post them. I need your help! Please reply back.

If you want to start one, then you should! I recommend thinking about the name for a good amount of time so you don’t want to change it later on like I did. If you get negative feedback, just try your best to ignore the rude people, and if you have to, you can always disable comments or delete some. If you make a channel, comment your link back here and i’ll give you some feedback!!

I have a blog and I post a lot and I guess I would consider myself as a beauty guru but the blog doesn’t belong to me. its a free website with the website and domain belonging to the business that help me create the site so should I buy the website and have it belonging to me? Because I’m not sure if I should and I’m thinking of starting a YouTube account too but I’m worried that I won’t gets lot of followers and just look like an amateur guru online. Plus there’s seems to be a lot of beauty guru’s on YouTube but I wanna stand out and be kind of famous for what I do on YouTube , how do I do that?

If you can see yourself still using it in 3 years, and it’s something you really want, then yes, I would say you should go ahead and buy the website. Maybe after you start YouTube then you could buy the blog once you know you’re committed. When you start out, things will probably go really slowly, and honestly, you probably will look like an amateur because that’s how everyone starts out, including me. Almost especially me. When I started out I looked like a little nerd who had no idea what she was doing and I was really awkward on camera but you just need to start out so you can start getting used to it. The way to stand out on youtube is to do things that not everybody is doing. Have your own style, talk like yourself, and edit the way you like, not the way that everybody else is and you will be unique!

Okay, I really won’t to start a channel in the near future, but I don’t know how to start off my first video. And do I need an computer or laptop to edit videos? If yes what are some go video editing sites?

That’s so exciting! You’ll definitely need some type of computer to edit on but maybe you could borrow someone’s for the time being. I downloaded adobe premiere pro but there are other editing softwares that are free like iMovie for macs and Windows Movie Maker for windows computers. Maybe make an intro video about what you’ll post about on your channel so people can meet you a bit and get a feel for your channel!

I think you should start wherever you are comfortable, and if it’s blogging, that’s a great way to slowly make your way into the internet-personality game. Your first post could be simply introducing yourself and talking a little about what your blog will be about. Good luck with everything!!

I’ve been wanting to do this for years, I love doing my makeup and watching other people do theirs on YouTube, but the problem is that I’m not the best at it and can’t afford high end stuff like Mac and whatnot… Plus I’m really insecure about myself so I don’t really feel comfortable sitting in front of a camera and doing close-ups etc. I have ideas of what kind of videos I want to make but these things are holding me back. Any suggestions?
